That's The Spirit! (National Post)

Frank Miller's noir craftsmanship inspired actresses Scarlett Johansson and Eva Mendes to embrace the femme-fatale flourishes of his newest film

The renowned graphic novelist Frank Miller knows how to write about anxiety, but he might have trouble dealing with his own as the opening of The Spirit approaches.

The Spirit is Miller's much anticipated live-action film version of the classic 1940s Will Eisner newspaper strip and subsequent comic book series. Opening on Christmas Day, the movie arrives with an important question: Can Miller --on his first solo directorial effort -- translate the stylish 1940s noir images onto the big screen?

There's a good chance he can. For one thing, Miller appreciates The Spirit's creative origins. He was an Eisner friend and associate, and admits that he based some of his more popular graphic novels on Eisner's tones and textures. Miller also codirected and co-wrote the digital Sin City film with Robert Rodriguez and penned the popular graphic novels Sin City and 300 (the movie became a worldwide hit). And Miller also famously made over Batman as the brooding Dark Knight in comics that inspired Christopher Nolan's hit movies Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

12 Questions With Eva Mendes (Moviefone)

{{fr|Eva Mendes à l'avant-première de Live ! d...Image via Wikipedia

In 'The Spirit,' she's Sand Saref, a jewel thief so hot she can melt the hearts of the undead -- namely the eponymous crime fighter (Gabriel Macht). Eva Mendes dished with Moviefone about re-teaming with Scarlett Johansson, why she has no problem with artistic nudity ... and why she thinks certain body parts should be in proportion.

Frank Miller gets in 'The Spirit' (Jam! Showbiz)

Comic-book icon channels The Spirit of his mentor in latest film
By -- Sun Media

NEW YORK -- Apart from Marvel's Stan Lee, if there is a figure who represents the link between the comic books of old and the movies coming to a theatre near you, it's Frank Miller.

The artist-writer, who gave us 300, Sin City and the Dark Knight incarnation of Batman, began his career in the colourfully ink-stained New York-based cauldron of comic-book art, mentored by the likes of Jim Shooter, Neal Adams -- but most of all, the legendary and prolific Will Eisner.

Theirs was a strange, combative relationship -- one in which Miller is finally getting the last word, three years after Eisner's death, making his solo directorial debut with a stylized movie of Eisner's signature noir hero from the '40s, The Spirit. Wherever he is, the female-form-obsessed Eisner must appreciate the casting -- Scarlett Johansson (Silken Floss), Eva Mendes (Sand Saref) and Jaime King (Lorelei), all playing various forms of femmes fatale tormenting our mordant hero (Gabriel Macht).

VIDEO: Eva Mendes Gets In "The Spirit" (The Early Show, CBS)

{{fr|Eva Mendes à l'avant-première de Live ! d...Eva Mendes image via Wikipedia

(CBS) From Denzel Washington and Johnny Depp to Will Smith and Nicholas Cage, actress Eva Mendes has worked with some of the Hollywood's hottest leading men.

Mendes is now co-starring in the "The Spirit," a film based on a 1940s comic book series. She plays Sand Saref, a woman who has a special relationship with The Spirit.

"They are childhood sweethearts, explains Mendes. "This film is visually stunning. It comes from the creative, genius mind of Frank Miller. What's really unbelievable with my character is I get to play not only a jewel thief, but a woman who's been married 14 times and killed every last one of her husbands. I mean, ladies, is that not just -- it's a sick fantasy, but, still a fantasy. Somewhat of a fantasy."

"Now she is quite a dame," adds Early Show co-anchor Julie Chen. "[She's] got the lashes."

"She's a dame. She's a broad," says Mendes. "We paid homage to the women back then, in the 1940s -- the Rita Hayworths and Bette Davis' of the world, the Ava Gardners. I had a lot of fun paying homage to those women."

Behind the 'Spirit' mask, a substantial career for actor Gabriel Macht (New York Daily News)

Gabriel Macht as the title character in the comic book-inspired film 'The Spirit,' opening Friday.

Who was that masked man?

The star of "The Spirit," opening Friday, may not be as recognizable – with or without the mask – as castmates Samuel L. Jackson and Eva Mendes, but the strong-jawed Gabriel Macht is ready for his closeup.

To get in the head of a character grappling with identity issues even as he wrestled with the bad guys, Macht plastered every inch of his trailer with storyboards and Xeroxes of the 1940s comic strips by Will Eisner that the movie was based on.

"His trailer was full of Spirit-phanelia," marveled Jackson. "He was dealing with his identity crisis all the time."

The threads of THE SPIRIT (Mania.com)

The SpiritImage by Strandell via Flickr

By Rob M. Worley
December 19, 2008

When we left the cast and crew of 'The Spirit' yesterday , actor Dan Lauria (who plays commissioner Dolan in the film) expressed his enthusiasm for the wardrobe he had in director Frank Miller's modern noir vision of Will Eisner's comic.

"I loved the costume you picked out for me. Right out of Bart MacLane's closet," Lauria said, referring to the actor who appeared in over a hundred classic movies including 'The Maltese Falcon'.

Of course the most important costume to get right were the threads Gabriel Macht wore as The Spirit.

"I worked hard on Gabe’s costume because at first it looked really foolish, until we spruced you up with the black outfit and everything," Miller told reporters but credits costume designer Michael Dennison for bringing the leading man's look to fruition.

Eva Mendes captures 'Spirit' of film genre (NJ.com)

by Lisa Rose

The Star-Ledger

Thursday December 18, 2008,

Glamorous, enigmatic and cutthroat in a literal way, the women in films and graphic novels from Frank Miller tend to be a bit more, er, proactive than typical comic genre female characters.

"The Spirit," opening Christmas Day, features Eva Mendes as a jewel thief/ace swimmer named Sand Saref. She co-stars with Scarlett Johansson as murderous scientist Silken Floss and Paz Vega as knife-wielding belly dancer Plaster of Paris.

Based on a 1940 comic by Will Eisner, the picture is the sole directorial debut from Miller who co-directed his graphic novel adaptation of "Sin City" with Robert Rodriguez. The writer's swords-and sandals epic "300" has also been made into a hit film.

The title character (Gabriel Macht) is a masked misfit for whom death is a curable condition. He battles a fashionable nemesis called the Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson).

On paper, Sand Saref could seem a type, a woman fixated with diamonds. Mendes says, however, that the character's neurotic need for shiny things is more than simple materialism.

This is the Cuban-American star's second appearance in a comic book adaptation, following her performance in "Ghost Rider" as a journalist in love with the engine-revving hero (Nicolas Cage). At 34, she has a list of credits that ranges from early roles in music videos to big parts in comedies -- "Hitch" -- and dramas -- "We Own the Night."

Eva Mendes in "The Spirit," opening Christmas Day.

We sat down for a chat with Mendes -- looking fab in a strapless dress -- during a "Spirit" press day at a New York hotel last weekend.

Q: Frank Miller is such an interesting visual stylist, how would you describe his technique working with the cast, helping you work on the characters?

A: He was very specific. Sometimes, when he was trying to communicate something to me about a scene, he would draw it out for me. In two seconds, he'd draw me as Sand Saref. I was like, "Can you sign that for me?"

Q: Did you get to keep any of them?

A: I kept a couple.

Spirit stars at abandoned warehouse (The Press Association)

BEVERLY HILLS, CA - DECEMBER 5: Actress Jessi...Image by Getty Images via Daylife

The stars of comic book film adaptation The Spirit have appeared at an abandoned warehouse.

Rather than a Leicester Square premiere, Samuel L Jackson, Eva Mendes and Scarlett Johannson graced the red carpet at the Old Post Office in central London, ahead of the film's world premiere in New York next week.

Jackson, who plays The Octopus, said his character was the villain to The Spirit's eponymous superhero. "He's kind of crazy, kind of wild, kind of genius and he wants to be the biggest criminal in the world," he said.

Johannson and Mendes both play sexy female characters. Mendes, wearing a ruffled yellow Bill Blass dress and Louis Vuitton heels, said she enjoyed baring her flesh for the film.

"It's so fun because it's not me. The minute I think it's me I wig out but it's so not me. I'm playing a character so if I drop my towel and show my bum it's not my bum."

"The Spirit" inspires us to talk femme fatales (AfterEllen.com)

Christmas day is just around the corner, and you know what that means: ribbons, tags, packages, boxes, bags — and the release of half a dozen much-hyped, mega-budget films. Among them is the movie adaptation of Will Eisner's The Spirit. It doesn't have any Nazis, puppies or backward-aging babies, but it promises killer performances from a bevy of women who want nothing more than seduction and destruction.

Scarlett Johansson plays Silken Floss, a frigid vixen; Eva Mendes plays Sand Saref, a conniving jewel thief; and Jaime King plays Lorelei, a phantom siren.

Of course, no superhero's tale would be complete without the quick-witted girl next door. To balance out Spirit's femme fatales is the police commissioner's daughter, Ellen Dolan, played by out actress Sarah Paulson.

Scarlett Johansson Says She'll Record Another Album, Still Has Leonard Cohen On The Brain (MTV.com)

Actress released Tom Waits cover LP in the spring.

Scarlett Johansson has had quite an active year. She starred in a couple of movies, married actor Ryan Reynolds and even indulged her inner rock star by releasing an album. But don't think that Johansson is done with the music business just yet, because she has plans for a follow-up.

Back in the spring, Johansson released a Tom Waits cover album, Anywhere I Lay My Head, and she promises it isn't her last. "I would love to do another album," she told MTV News while promoting "The Spirit," the new film based on Will Eisner's comic book.

NY Times on Frank Miller's "The Spirit" Movie: "108 overstuffed, interminable minutes"

December 25, 2008

"... I’m just trying to figure out why, somewhere in the middle of “The Spirit,” Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson arrive on screen decked out in swastikas and jackboots. Nothing in the logic of the film explains it, but then, to use the phrase “the logic of the film” when talking about “The Spirit” may be to take the “oxy” out of “oxymoronic.”

To ask why anything happens in Frank Miller’s sludgy, hyper-stylized adaptation of a fabled comic book series by Will Eisner may be an exercise in futility. The only halfway interesting question is why the thing exists at all."

Scarlett Johansson, left, and Eva Mendes, will star in Frank Miller's the Spirit.Tobias Schwarz/ReutersScarlett Johansson, left, and Eva Mendes, will star in Frank Miller's the Spirit.

If you can't wait to catch The Spirit. You are not alone. For those who might not know, The Spirit is the Frank Miller live-action film version of the classic 1940s Will Eisner newspaper strip and subsequent comic book series.

Opening on Dec. 25, the movie arrives with lots of anticipation and a question; as in can Miller translate the 1940s noir images onto the big screen? At least Miller gets The Spirit. He was an Eisner friend. And his resume suits the challenge. Plus his intention to shoot the movie in the fancy Sin City CGI style made sense to just about everybody.

'The Spirit' Premieres: ScarJo Is A Lover, Not A Fighter (Socialite Life)

Dec. 18, 2008

Scarlett Johansson, one of the cadre of curvaceous female co-stars in Frank Miller's The Spirit chatted on the red carpet about her real-life grappling abilities and whether or not she co-star or Eva Mendes would win in a fight against one another.

Johansson told Entertainment Tonight, "Probably Eva. I might slice her with my verbal kung fu though." Ha! She just called Eva dumb. Oh, I'm just trying to start some shit to see if we can't get these ladies to fight for real. Imagine how much money we could get for selling a tissue used to clean their bloody noses?

If you ask nicely, resident movie mean guy Samuel L. Jackson will tick off a laundry list of comic books he loved as a kid, and sometimes, still reads.

"Superman, Batman, The Flash, Aquaman, Silver Surfer, you know, the ordinary," said the actor, who stars in the upcoming The Spirit, which premiered Wednesday night..

Opening Christmas Day, it stars Eva Mendes, Sarah Paulson, Scarlett Johansson and Gabriel Macht. Jackson plays his nemesis, The Octopus.

"It's pure boy stuff," Jackson said of comic-based films. "Guys like to chase each other and hit each other over the head."

Samuel L. Jackson Did His Own Makeup In The Spirit (io9.com)

By Meredith Woerner

Dec 17 2008

Director Frank Miller rewrote the Spirit script to accommodate ScarJo and let Samuel Jackson improvise — and even reinvent his character's look. We met the director and cast, and learned just how much they collaborated.

Letting Frank Miller gallop across The Spirit film set unedited opened the doors for the actors to do so as well. In a press conference for his newly released film The Spirit Miller described how one should adapt a comic to film:

As far as what translates from comics to film, I find that they are the better source material, and would cite marvel's recent Iron Man and Incredible Hulk as wonderful witty jobs at adapting them. I think if they get too presumptuous, comic book movies tend to fall apart.

That's all fine and dandy to say, Mr. Miller, but revelations throughout the conference revealed that you and your cast went a little willy nilly with changes and additions. Case in point: the lovely Scarlett Johansson's part, Silken Floss, was completely rewritten and expanded once the gorgeous ScarJo wanted in on the project. And that was only the beginning of the actors dictating changes to the movie.

Frank Miller & Cast Get into Spirit of 'The Spirit' (Newsarama.com)

HOLLYWOOD - DECEMBER 17: (L-R) Actor Samuel L...Image by Getty Images via DaylifeBy Lucas Siegel
17 December 2008

The NYC-inspired "Central City" is character in of-itself in comic book legend Will Eisner's seminal work The Spirit. So perhaps it was appropriate that when it was time for cast and crew to gather for a press event promoting Frank Miller's solo-directorial debut big screen adaptation of the comic book, they descended on New York City, rather than the more suburban metropolis that is Hollywood.

Present at the weekend press conference was Miller, along with star Gabriel Macht [The Spirit], Eva Mendes [Sand Saref], Scarlett Johansson [Silken Floss], Samuel L. Jackson [The Octopus], Dan Lauria, [Commissioner Dolan], and Sarah Paulson [Ellen Dolan]. The stars took their seats, and the questions began.

Question: Gabriel, this seems to be your big breakthrough, can you talk about your experience playing The Spirit? And Scarlett, how did you come into this role?

Gabriel Macht: My name is Gabriel Macht, I play El Spirito [laughs]. In many ways, any part you get as an actor has the potential for breaking through, and I feel like I’ve done a bunch of those in my career, but honestly this one happens to have the biggest potential because I’m involved with Frank’s vision of the film. There’s no greater opportunity for a younger actor than to play The Spirit, and I had the best time working on the film, so hopefully people come and see it and we can make a couple more!

Scarlett Johansson: I’m Scarlett Johansson, and I play Silken Floss...

Frank Miller: [interrupts] Doesn’t she make that sound great? [laughter from the audience]

Getting into THE SPIRIT - A Mania Exclusive interview with Gabriel Macht

Picture I took of {{w|Gabriel Macht}} at a que...Gabriel Macht image via Wikipedia

By: Rob Vaux

Thursday, December 11, 2008

Gabriel Macht has been active in film, theater, and television for most of the last decade, starting with a role on the original Beverly Hills 90210. He has since been seen in such films as Behind Enemy Lines, The Recruit, A Love Song for Bobby Long, and The Good Shepherd. It took Frank Miller to give him a starring part, however: he's slated to appear as resurrected cop Denny Colt in Will Eisner's The Spirit, due for release Christmas Day. In an exclusive interview with Mania.com, Macht talked about stepping into the character's shoes, as well as working with Miller and meeting the expectations of a new generation of comic book films.

Question: How did you get involved with the project? Were you a big comics fan going in?

Gabriel Macht: I wasn't a crazy comic book fan, but I was a big fan of comic book movies. My agent sent me into this audition without saying much about it. It was only when I got in there that I found out it was for Frank Miller. My interest level jumped up by about a factor of 10. I had loved the Sin City movie and the 300 movie both, and suddenly here's the guy who created them introducing himself to me. I think every actor wants to work for someone with a vision, and Frank's is one of the strongest I've ever seen. I jumped on the Will Eisner stuff once I got the part, but in the early stages, what we had were Frank's storyboards for the film. And they were so clear and so beautiful and gave such a tremendous impression of where he wanted to go with this movie. We established a great chemistry right away--almost as soon as I read for it--and while the auditioning process was fairly long, I would get more and more excited about it with each step I took.

Review - 30 minutes of Frank Miller's The Spirit (DenOfGeek.com)

Fotos del rodaje de The SpiritImage by yotambientengosuperpoderes via Flickr

By Michael Leader

We've been to see some new footage from January's new comic-movie release...

Frank Miller's directorial debut, The Spirit, has been attracting a lot of fanboy rage and geek disdain. Adapted from the weekly newspaper comic by industry innovator Will Eisner, it is set to be the most divisive comic book movie of the year, putting a cap on what has been a superlative 12 months for heroes (super or otherwise) on the silver screen.

I just had the opportunity to see a preview clip-reel of the film, which consisted of short, less-than-5-minute segments, punctuated by introductory and explanatory sections from Deborah DelPrete, one of the producers. I'll save my overflowing emotions for later, let me give you the long and short of what we were allowed to see, in stylish prose.

Clip 1. Opening scene, plus credits. The Spirit (Gabriel Macht) gets a call (on his cell phone!) from Detective Sussman, telling him to get down to the docks. As the opening credits flash across the screen, The Spirit embarks: first through the cemetery, then atop apartment blocks - a black silhouette, with a red tie standing out in the night-time dark. A lone harmonica plays, building up to a full-blown rousing strings theme straight out of the Danny Elfman superhero theme text book. As he jumps from roof to roof, The Spirit speaks to his city through a voice-over - 'my city... she's there for me... my sweetheart... my play-thing'. He detours, after hearing a scream, and makes short work of the two goons holding up a dame in an alleyway. As he bids the girl farewell, she gasps at the sight of a knife in his back, and at the dismissive way he tugs it out and discards it. 'What are you?' she whispers; The Spirit looks confused, contemplative, and leaves without an answer. A cop sidles up to her, 'that's The Spirit'.

Unplugged: Scarlett surprises (xpress4me.com)

{{es|Scarlett Johansson en la Rambla de Barcel...Image via Wikipedia

Can you talk about working with (Sin City creator) Frank Miller on your new movie The Spirit? What made you want to do the movie?

I’ve never really been someone who knows anything about graphic novels or comics. It’s not that I’m not a fan, but I’ve just never been exposed to that whole world. I loved Sin City, I loved 300 and I loved the kind of mystery of Frank Miller. I was interested to meet him. I heard that he was doing this project and that there were some fun female roles. I had heard of the graphic novel for The Spirit. I knew of it and I wanted to find out more.

So you pursued the role?

Yeah. Well, Frank and I kind of pursued each other. I heard about it and he kind of came at me. Both of us were interested in meeting the other person and we had lunch. We just caught on like a house on fire. It was like, ‘I love you. You’re fantastic.’ We just got along so well.

Who do you play in the movie?

I play a character named Silken Floss. When I read the script there wasn’t really a part for me. But when I met with Frank, he was like, ‘I don’t know where you fit in, but I want to work with you.’ We both felt that way, so he wrote the part for me which was fun, because I had no idea what it was going to be or anything. I knew that he was kind of writing it for me. It was great. So you’ll just have to wait and see.

What was it like working with Frank?

I loved working with him. He’s wonderful, he’s such a visionary, just fantastic. He would come on the sets and lead the whole crew into some kind of presentation. He would draw the storyboard and lead us. I mean he sees it, he can see how he wants it. He’s a visionary, he really is, and it was exciting. He creates these fantastic characters and some of them are just so rotten. None of his characters are grey. None of us are heroes, they’re all kind of grey, you know? And I love that.

Prediction #1: "The Spirit" (Frank Miller) (I Dream in Indigo)

By Indigo

I'm going to start doing a "Prediction" column where I predict what will be the next good movie, "big thing", trend, hot song, etc..

The Spirit!
"Directed by Frank Miller, written by Frank Miller and Will Eisner, and from the creators of 'Sin City' and '300', comes 'The Spirit"...

This movie looks like it might be the best movie all year! I'm sold on the mere fact that it's directed and written by Frank Miller, (the same director as "Sin City") and has a wicked trailer. The cinematography, the color scheme , and the effects are all dope. Plus, I just saw Samuel Jackson in "Soul Men" and his performance was great in that, so I'm excited to see him in another movie. Cast members Eva Mendes and Scarlette Johansson make "The Spirit" even more promising...

VIDEO: Stunning Scarlett and Eva, Trailer Horrific (Javno.com)

From JAVNO.com: "The film adaptation of the comic strip “The Spirit” by Will Eisner is Frank Miller’s (Sin City) second directing project, but the first project he directed on his own. The film is expected to premiere on Christmas and the movie’s trailers have already been put up on YouTube. The imagination of viewers has been additionally tickled by the stunning actresses in the film, Eva Mendes and Scarlett Johansson.

"But critics of the newest trailer are slashing. Film bloggers think that “The Spirit” is much too like “Sin City” and the dialogues we can hear in the trailer are horrific. See for yourself. We are hoping that the problem is that this excerpt has been taken out of context."

"I'm worried about showing my bum in new movie"—Eva Mendes (DailyRecord.co.uk)

The Daily Record, UK

THIS is the rear view that has been giving Eva Mendes sleepless nights ahead of the premiere of her latest movie.

The actress bares her bum in the adaptation of Will Eisner's 1940s comic book The Spirit.

Eva admitted stripping for her role as cat burglar Sand Saref made her nervous.

She said: "I'm excited to see what happens with this scene. Well, I don't think it's 'excited' - I'm actually nervous.

"I think they have a butt shot of me. I'm not sure how it ended up."

Interview : Scarlett Johansson (Moviehole.Net)

Alluring and breathtaking, Scarlett Johansson sports a stunning diamond engagement ring on her left hand and looks every part the movie star.

The New York resident is in town to promote her starring role in Woody Allen's "Vicky Cristina Barcelona", in which she plays a flighty New Yorker attracted to Spanish artist Javier Bardem and his ex-wife, played by Penelope Cruz. It's a far cry from her next film, Frank Miller's "The Spirit" both of which she discussed with Paul Fischer.

Question: Woody Allen does create these really extraordinary female characters of which you've played several now. What do you think sets your character in this movie apart from her predecessors?

Johansson: Well, I mean, they're all such different characters. It's a difficult question to answer because everything about her, I think other than her blonde hair you know, I'd be hard to find some comparison between her and the character I played in "Scoop". I mean it's such a ridiculous character that I played in that film, but I think that's the best thing about working with Woody other than just getting to spend every day chatting with him and bothering him and poking him and stuff like that (laughter).

In the film, Johansson plays a character named Silken Floss. "She’s this nurse. On the gray spectrum, she’s actually the lighter side of gray," she says. "It’s a kind of an undeveloped role, so I think that was exciting for Frank, too, that he could develop the character and develop her story. So you’ll just have to wait and see.”

Scarlett Johansson on Frank Miller (Los Angeles Daily News)

BOB STRAUSS, LOS ANGELES DAILY NEWS: Next up, you’re Silken Floss in Frank Miller’s movie adaptation of Will Eisner’s comics hero The Spirit. How was that?

SCARLETT JOHANSSON: Working with Frank Miller was so exciting for me. He’s such a visionary. He’ll literally sit the crew there and come in with a big storyboard that he’s drawn out and lead you through it. Then everybody disperses all excited about the next thing. It’s so much fun. And I loved playing this big, sexy character whose dialogue is so black and white. Then there’s Sam Jackson, who I’ve always admired and is so great to work with; you couldn’t ask for a more exciting co-star who is such a pro.

'Spirit' moves up release to Dec. 25! (Hollywood Reporter)

Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson star in the film

By Carolyn Giardina

May 6, 2008, 10:52 PM

Hollywood Reporter

Lionsgate has moved up the nationwide release of its comic adaptation "The Spirit" -- written and directed by Frank Miller -- to Dec. 25.

The film, based on the comic book series created by the late Will Eisner, was originally slated to open Jan. 16, 2009.

Also slated to open on Dec. 25 are Disney's "Bedtime Stories" and Fox 2000 Pictures' "Marley & Me."

Of the move, Lionsgate president of theatrical films Tom Ortenberg said: "Comic-Con fans (in New York in March) resoundingly confirmed what we felt in our bones about 'The Spirit': this is a great film and an irresistible piece of entertainment. ... For all of us, it was an easy decision."

"The Spirit" stars Gabriel Macht, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Eva Mendes, Sarah Paulson, Stana Katic, Dan Lauria, Jaime King, Paz Vega and Louis Lombardi. Odd Lot Entertainment and Lionsgate are production partners.

International release dates have not yet been announced. Sony Pictures Releasing International is handling distribution in many European territories and Latin America. Odd Lot International is distributing to the rest of the world, except for the U.K. and Australia, where the film is being released by Lionsgate.

Maxim Magazine Pimps The Spirit Movie Babes

You can't blame the producers of "Will Eisner's The Spirit" for the avalanche of advance publicity promoting the movie's release - although it is still eight months off. Today I picked up the latest issue of Maxim - which I read for the pictures, not the stories - and the cover photo is of Jaime King, one of the many beautiful actress featured in Frank Miller's upcoming film. And the cover also teases a page of photos of another co-star, Scarlett Johansson.

And let me add this: as his authorized biographer, I can't say whether Will Eisner would have liked Miller's version of The Spirit, considering he always opposed the idea of Hollywood adopting his character. But as man who loved beautiful dames, I think it safe to say he would have approved of Miller's female cast!

Nurse Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Jo in one of the "leaked" green screen shots from Will Eisner's The Spirit. Somehow, I'm guessing the hat, glasses and leather jacket comes off shortly after this scene. (Found on Hollywood Newsroom)

Frank Miller Brings 'Spirit' World To Life With Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson (MTV)

'I am a kid in a candy store,' first-time director says of unlikely potential blockbuster.

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico — You have more objects in your living room than are present on the massive soundstage housing the production of "Will Eisner's 'The Spirit.' " The director is a Hollywood newcomer, on the verge of his 51st birthday. Samuel L. Jackson is wearing a black-and-white fur coat, with similarly colored eyebrows to match. Welcome to the set of Tinseltown's most unlikely potential blockbuster.

"This is the only way I have been trained to direct, and I love it because it brings [directing] closer to the art of the page," Frank Miller explained this week, moving from his "Sin City" co-directing apprenticeship to his very own Home-Depot-size warehouse drenched in green. "I am a kid in a candy store."

The candy store is called "Will Eisner's 'The Spirit,' " based on a 67-year-old character and the decades-long friendship Miller shared with its creator. Eisner may not have lived long enough to see actors like Jackson, Eva Mendes, Scarlett Johannson and Gabriel Macht bring his eccentric characters to the silver screen, but Miller still feels his presence every day.

"I was just 13 years old when I came across Will Eisner's 'The Spirit,' published by Jim Warren, and was blown away," the graphic novelist-turned-filmmaker remembered. "I thought it was somebody new to comics, because it was so far ahead of anything else coming out. I felt it, religiously. There was one night when I picked up the latest issue of 'The Spirit,' and I was so excited, I had to stop by a lamppost in Vermont where I lived and read it on the spot. That was the Sand Saref story, which is now the basis of this movie."

On the set of 'The Spirit'

"Cut! Why are you smiling?"

"You told me to smile."

"No, no, SNARL, not smile."

So goes the exchange between Frank Miller and actor Gabriel Macht on the set of 'The Spirit', Frank Miller's new film based on Will Eisner's long-running comic strip. Macht, decked out in a fedora, black eye mask, dark suit and red tie has been hanging off a mock up of what looks to be a fire escape for several minutes. Once Miller has gotten his shot, Macht takes a few moments to speak to us about what it is like to play the title character of the latest Frank Miller project.

Macht, last seen opposite Mandy Moore in 'Because I Said So' and 'The Good Shepherd' has died his typically blond hair brown and his once brown eyes are now a light blue comes off as incredibly gracious. He is humbled to be starring as the title character in 'The Spirit' and is thrilled with the opportunity. Then again, for this thirty-five year old actor, this could be the role that launches Macht from virtual obscurity to Hollywood's latest leading man. "To have Frank as a Director, it's a dream come true for me; it's mind blowing how fortunate I feel. I am having a brilliant time and everyone is at the top of their game."

Earlier this week, ComingSoon.net/Superhero Hype! flew down to Albuquerque, New Mexico to visit the green screen sets of Will Eisner's The Spirit, which director Frank Miller has been shooting at the city's new facilities, Albuquerque (ABQ) Studios. It brings to life Will Eisner's classic comic book character Denny Colt, a police officer in Central City who was killed in action, but then returned as The Spirit, a masked crimefighter who has a way of attracting the ladies—and not only the nice ones—but who's thwarted at every turn by the evil mastermind The Octopus.

The film is being made much like Miller's Sin City and Zack Snyder's adaptation of Miller's 300 with actors doing all of their performances in front of a green screen and all the backgrounds and environments created using the latest computer graphics. This was ComingSoon.net's second visit to an all green screen set after spending some time on the set of 300 two years ago, and while one might not expect there to not be a lot to write about when a movie is being made with no actual sets, in fact, there's still stuff to see, since it's an interesting process that requires a lot of clever workarounds for things that tend to be easy when using practical sets, such as how actors interact with objects within their environment, or lack thereof.

The production had taken up two of the larger soundstages at the brand new Albuquerque Studios facility, where security was extremely tight. Cameras and audio recording were verboten, and anyone who wanted to visit the stages needed to turn in their personal ID in order to get a special badge with an image of what looked like a Frank Miller drawn full body portrait of The Spirit. There wasn't any question that it was worth losing or forgetting your driver's license or passport there, if it meant a chance to watch a master like Miller at work. The Spirit is the first production to use the complex's two newest stages and they were on Day 27 of a shoot that would be going through December 14.

Sarah Paulson has joined the cast of "Will Eisner's The Spirit," comic auteur Frank Miller's directorial effort featuring the classic comic strip character. Also joining the cast are Dan Lauria, Stana Katic, Johnny Simmons and Louis Lombardi.

Paulson joins leading ladies Eva Mendes and Scarlett Johansson in the film noir about a rookie cop who returns from the dead to fight crime as the Spirit from the shadows of Central City. However, while Mendes and Johansson are playing femme fatales, Paulson is playing the hero's true love, Dr. Ellen Dolan, the police commissioner's daughter.

Gabriel Macht is on board as Denny Colt/the Spirit, and Samuel L. Jackson will play the villainous Octopus.

Lauria (ABC's mini "The Path to 9/11") is playing the police commissioner, while Katic ("Feast of Love") is a rookie cop. Simmons ("Evan Almighty") plays a young Denny Colt, while Lombardi (Fox's "24") will play Phobos, a henchman for the Octopus.

Paulson was nominated for a Golden Globe earlier this year for her work on NBC's "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip." She is repped by ICM and Joan Hyler Management.

MAJOR FANBOY ALERT: Scarlett Johansson Cast in Will Eisner's The Spirit

It's a triple feature for Johansson

By Borys Kit and Tatiana Siegel

Scarlett Johansson has lined up a series of roles that will see her moving quickly from modern relationships to comic strip noir to costume drama.

Johansson has joined the all-star cast of New Line Cinema's ensemble comedy "He's Just Not That Into You," which she will shoot first before then materializing as a femme fatale in "Will Eisner's The Spirit," being directed by Frank Miller for Odd Lot Entertainment and Lionsgate.

In the winter, she will don a crown for "Mary Queen of Scots," to which she's has been attached to some time. Johansson becomes the latest actor to book back-to-back-to-back roles in anticipation of a possible strike.

In "Into You," Johansson will play a pilates instructor/aspiring singer who has an affair with a married man and hopes that he will leave his wife for her.

She joins the already cast Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Connelly, Bradley Cooper, Kevin Connolly, Justin Long, Ginnifer Goodwin and Drew Barrymore in the movie of interconnecting story arcs dealing with the challenges of reading or misreading human behavior.

Ken Kwapis is directing the movie, which Barrymore and Nancy Juvonen are producing via their Flower Films banner. Production executives Michele Weiss and Michael Disco are overseeing for New Line.

For "Spirit," Miller's adaptation of the classic Eisner film noir comic strip series, Johansson is in final negotiations to play a dangerous beauty named Silken Floss. Eisner's strip was known for its women with dangerous curves, and Miller is intent on keeping that tradition. Floss is a sexy and intelligent secretary with a vindictive instinct that makes her the perfect accomplice to the Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson), an evil mastermind.

Gabriel Macht is playing the title character, a detective who fakes his own death in order to fight crime in Central City as the masked man known as the Spirit. Production is scheduled to start in October, with the film scheduled to be released in 2009.

Odd Lot Entertainment and Lionsgate are production partners on "Spirit," with Lionsgate holding domestic and U.K. rights. Deborah Del Prete and Gigi Pritzker will produce along with Michael Uslan of Batfilm Productions Inc. Batfilm co-founder Benjamin Melniker and Steve Maier are executive producers. Odd Lot's Linda McDonough and Batfilm's F.J. DeSanto serve as co-producers.
