MICHAEL CHABON WRITES INTRODUCTION TO ³A SPIRITED LIFE²; APPRECIATION OF WILL EISNER BY NEAL ADAMS I¹ve read them and they¹re spectacular. It¹s entirely a tribute to Will Eisner that these giants of their respective fields contributed the opening pieces to my autobiography. (Neither man knew me before this book.) When I interviewed Adams (X-Men, Green Lantern/Green Arrow, Continuity Studios), his thoughts seemed best suited to an appreciation and he quickly agreed. There¹s an even better story to Chabon¹s introduction. He agreed to write it, then reluctantly begged off due to time constraints (little things like scripting drafts of Spiderman 2 and the film adaptation of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay). Dark Horse Comics Editor Diana Schutz stepped in and twisted his arm. Then, for good measure, Eisner himself spoke with Chabon on my behalf and offered an extra incentive that they previously discussed: a Spirit/Escapist crossover story he would contribute to Chabon¹s Dark Horse comic, ³The Escapist.² That story, which will be on sale April 13, was literally Eisner¹s last work. The memorial will take place on April 7 at 2:30 PM at The Angel Orensanz Foundation, 172 Norfolk Street, New York, NY. The comic book pioneer passed away on January 3, 2005 at the age of 87 following a December 22, 2004 quadruple bypass heart surgery.
